As a child of the 80’s, I looked forward to Saturday morning cartoons with gleeful anticipation. Did you know that cartoons were only available ONE day a week? GASP! What ever did we do with ourselves the rest of the week?
For my part, I loved the Jestons. I identified with Elroy the most. He seemed like the most intelligent of the lot and he had the best adventures. As I watched an “old fashioned” episode of the Jestons with my kids this week, I noticed that many of the futuristic inventions on the show are now a reality. What an exciting time to be alive!
Smart home technology is becoming more popular as we strive to find a better or smarter way to live. Recently Coldwell Banker teamed up with CNET to finally define exactly what the term smart home means. This article goes in detail about the newly minted definition of a “Smart Home”. The basic definition is this…
“Smart home: A home that is equipped with network-connected products (aka “smart products,” connected via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or similar protocols) for controlling, automating and optimizing functions such as temperature, lighting, security, safety or entertainment, either remotely by a phone, tablet, computer or a separate system within the home itself.”
While we are not quite ready to live in the futuristic world of George, Jane, Judy, and Elroy, there is some amazing technology available that would make them feel right at home.
1. Smart Watches
This was an amazing bit of foresight for 1985. The watch for watching videos or video chatting was a simple accessory for the characters like a new hat. However this idea created a spark of inspiration for companies like Apple and Pebble who both have rolled out similar products. In fact, the technology that exists today far supersedes what the Jetson’s had in mind. They never even pondered the idea of e-mail, websurfing, or Facebooking.
Who needs to read the physical newspaper anymore? We read many of our favorite newspapers and magazines online, let alone the information you pick up from social media sources like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. We can pull up video on our phones and “flick” it to our smart TV hanging on the wall to watch it on the big screen. Boy, did it sure look great for George Jetson when he kicked back in his favorite chair.
3. 3D Printed Food
The Jetsons family had a home food replicator that could churn out anything from asparagus to stroganoff. There have been many times in my adult life that I have wished for one of those contraptions for my own home. Now companies CojoJet are making it possible to create delicious 3-D printed entrees and desserts. Yes, they created a Hershey’s chocolate 3D printing machine and can print amazingly tasty works of chocolate art.
4. Robotic Cleaners
There were no dirty floors in the Jetson’s apartment. There was a neat little robot that rolled along the floor and cleaned up spills and messes. I have longed for one of these devices as I a quite sure that a decent sized colony could live happily beneath my dining room table. Don’t you wish you had one of those devices to make the messes go away? Now, we have dozens of devices such as www.irobot.com that will do the trick.
5. Jet Packs
Even James Bond knew in 1965 that this would be a cool invention. 007 used a jet pack to get escape from SPECTRE agent and Elroy uses his to go to school and Space Scouts. Jet packs are still being perfected so they aren’t available for general consumption just yet, startups like AquaFlyer, Martin JetPack and Jet Pack International are working towards that dream of commuting via jetpack a reality. For now jet packs are mostly used in recreational watersports that have been sold to rental shops for thrill-seeking tourists.
